1. Peace Hotel (和平饭店)
Your journey starts at the Peace Hotel, originally the Sassoon House, built in 1929. This iconic building has a rich history and stunning architecture. To enter, you’ll need to make a reservation or visit during special hours, but even from the outside, it’s a remarkable sight illuminated at night.
2. The Bund and Historic Buildings (外滩/万国建筑群)
From the Peace Hotel, walk along Zhongshan Road, where the famous Bund Historic Buildings, known as the “World Architecture Group,” line the street. On one side, you’ll see the shimmering Huangpu River, and on the other, you’ll pass architectural masterpieces from different eras and styles. The mix of Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical buildings all lit up after dark creates a magical atmosphere.
3. Yifeng Bund Source (益丰外滩源)
As you continue along Beijing East Road, the crowds will start to thin, allowing you to enjoy a quieter atmosphere. The red brick walls of Yifeng Bund Source are a striking feature, and across from it, you’ll spot the luxurious Peninsula Hotel. This area is full of character and offers a nice contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Bund itself.
4. Rockbund (洛克外滩源)
Rockbund is an elegant, peaceful street located on Yuanmingyuan Road, stretching 462 meters long. It’s a refreshing change from the city’s busy avenues, offering a tranquil vibe amidst the flourishing cityscape. As you walk, you’ll pass the Ampere & Co. Building, Yuanmingyuan Apartments, and Hami Building, eventually arriving at the charming New Trinity Church. Along the way, there are plenty of boutique stores such as Guoxia, Aesop, Luneurs, and Arabica, all worth a stop. Best of all, at night, you can enjoy these spots without waiting in long lines.
5. Zhapu Road Bridge (乍浦路桥)
At the end of Yuanmingyuan Road, you’ll reach Zhapu Road Bridge, one of the best spots for viewing Lujiazui’s famous “three-piece set”—the Shanghai Tower (上海中心大厦), Jin Mao Tower (金茂大厦), and the Shanghai World Financial Center (环球金融中心). The breeze from the river, combined with the fantastic view, makes it an ideal spot for photos. Unlike the crowded Bund, this location allows you to capture beautiful skyline shots without the crowds.
6. China Post Museum and Sichuan Road Bridge (中国邮政博物馆/四川路桥)
On one side of Zhapu Road Bridge, you’ll find the China Post Museum, often referred to as the “Gate of Shanghai.” If you plan your visit for a Wednesday, Thursday, or Saturday morning, you can even explore the museum between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. To the side of the museum is Sichuan Road Bridge, which offers more scenic views of the Suzhou River.
7. Waibaidu Bridge (外白渡桥)
The final stop on your walk is the historic Waibaidu Bridge, famous for its appearances in numerous films and TV shows. The bridge, built in 1907, has a timeless beauty, and many visitors come here to snap photos of the picturesque river views and the glowing skyline beyond. Fun fact: this bridge was a key filming location for the famous scene where Yiping jumps into the river in the classic Chinese drama Romance in the Rain.
This 2-hour night walk offers the perfect blend of stunning cityscapes, historical architecture, and peaceful, less crowded spots – giving you an unforgettable way to experience Shanghai’s illuminated beauty.
